The Helpful Herb is a 3rd generation iteration of something that I have since a child had a fascination and draw towards, plant medicine. I started my initial herbal body care business back in 2015, and since then I have been educating myself with various classes from Sacred Plant Traditions and The Elderberry, attended two Wise Woman Herbal Conferences in Black Mountain NC and completed 100 hours with the Chestnut School of Herbal Medicine.
I started really thinking and creating for the health and wellbeing of those I love. Through that process I really found a love of creating remedies and creating healing and medicinal applications for my family
I adore the process it all takes, from wild-crafting, harvesting, drying, salves, syrups, decoctions, infusions and creating little gifts from nature. I love looking at my oils infusing in the sun, and the clinking of the bottles in the apothecary. The beauty of herbs and roots in glass, the smells of oils and herbs that permeate the air. It’s my happy place.
I am not a certified herbalist and have so much more to learn and through that continued learning process I hope to help educate you. The idea of starting the Helpful Herb online and now in brick and mortar, was to create a space unique to me, and something I hope is unique to you here in Madison and elsewhere. A place where you can come and get the herbs, roots, teas, tincture kits, essential oils, poultice packs, salves, mushrooms, and natural cleaning solutions needed for various creations and concoctions created in your own kitchen. I am doing my best to source what I can from my own gardens and other local suppliers. I hope to be a bulk supplier for those needing it and have sourced many of my herbs from Mountain Rose Herb Company out of Eugene Oregon to meet demand. They are a highly reputable are trusted supplier and their herbs are USDA organic certified.
My personal goal with the opening of The Helpful Herb is to not only grow in my knowledge of plant medicine, working on herbal solutions for my own health challenges and those of my family and friends, but also be able to offer easy access for those wanting to create their own home apothecaries and remedies.
The Helpful Herb is at its infancy in many ways as I work to get moving on herbal blog posts on my website www.thehelpfulherb.com where I hope to discuss not only what I am learning, but recipes, herbal profiles where we explore specific herbs/roots and how they can benefit us!
The Shop location is where all those recipe’ ideas can come to fruition as you get the supplies you need. If you need an ounce of dandelion root, I have you covered. Need 1lb of Nettle or Astragalus root….no problem. Need just a cup of castile soap for a recipe you want to try and not have to buy the whole gallon? Need bentonite clay, or a quick gift, no problem. Come down with a cold/flu and do not want to shlep to Charlottesville or elsewhere to get some Echinacea and other immunity blends for teas or tinctures? Look no further!
